Initial rough sketches for a slightly different idea.
Some refinement of both ideas;
The final concept materializes

Actual math/layout/dimensions for upper parts

Actual math/layout/dimensions for Slate base.
Accidental that it looks like a face.
The raw materials. On top of the picnic table: slate, walnut, jatoba, upper lamp.
On the bench: multi-pack of the base halogens; originally intended base molding
wood (apple). Due to a math error, the apple was cut too short and I used
some preformed oak molding instead.

Side view. The walnut board was 8' @ 1x10

Initial round of formed/cut content. Back row (left to right) consists of:
Y-shaped arm to conceal upper lamp; cedar closet paneling scraps (for the base);
oak preformed molding for base; upper 'wings'; electrical bits.

Different view of the wood and slate

Closer view of walnut with groove cut in it for copper tubing.
The yellowish stuff is plain old carpenters glue used to try to make
the bottom of the gouged/ground out channel flat and even; Black
stuff is velcro glued on top of that; the holes are for dowel pins.
The hope was to construct something which could be disassembled if needed
without destroying it, but sturdy enough to not fall over if gently bumped.

Cedar cut and installed into assembled base.
Electrical installed into the base
Walnut and Jatoba items ready for final assembly. Side A of walnut
With side B of walnut
Walnut only inserted into base; lights work.
With Jatoba in place, you can see the not-yet-concealed screws used to
anchor jatoba to walnut. In spite of the lack of focus.
A better look at the upper part (prior to final cleanup of hiding the
power cord for the upper lamp).
A look at the lower part of the whole
All wires in correct spots, and switched on.
Side view of it powered on. The wings turned out to be extraordinarily
difficult to attach - they are at 45 degrees to the sides of the jatoba board;
getting them clamped in place in such a way that they would stay was
a major challenge.
So that's the sculpture/lamp. I have some touchup to do on the base of the
Jatoba due to a minor oops during final assembly but it isn't particularly
obvious what the problem is.
I did end up having to glue the jatoba to the base to get it to stay in place.
The only goof that I can't figure out how to correct is concealing of the extra
length of power cord from the upper lamp to the switch.
